What Las Vegas and Phoenix can teach us about planning for a drier West

If you are considering moving to Las Vegas - especially if you are thinking about retiring here - there is one question that eventually seems to come up:

What about the water?

It's a fair question. Nevada is the driest state in the U.S., and Las Vegas, which sits in the Mojave Desert, averages a minuscule 4.2 inches of rainfall per year. We’ve all seen the news and heard the warnings, some legitimate and some rather dire. It’s no secret that Lake Mead has dropped dramatically over the past quarter century. The reservoir's famous white bathtub ring is hard to ignore, and the seven Colorado River states are still wrestling with how to live on a river that produces less water than the West once assumed it would.
